I believe my profession is the best one in the world! Every day I get to help so many wonderful and unique people. I never find my work growing old, because having new people come into the practice, and getting to know them, keeps everything fresh and interesting. As an orthodontist, I am able to assist people not just with their oral health needs, but with their self-esteem and self-confidence. Watching the transformation in patients, as their new smile develops and they start to feel better about their appearance, is extremely rewarding. I am honored to be part of that process. I truly love seeing all the beautiful smiles I have created over the years. I love the interaction with my patients and their families. I love the relationships I have developed with each of them — relationships that go beyond oral healthcare provider and patient. Because orthodontic treatment takes place over a period of months or years, and I see most patients about once a month, I get to know them as individuals, each with different experiences, interests, and dreams.
Throughout the course of treatment, I learn from each patient, and those lessons, though unintentional, have made me a better person.
Education and Continuing Education
I obtained my Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and then attended the University of Southern California (USC) where I was awarded my Doctorate of Dental Surgery, followed by my orthodontics certificate. Although I’d completed my certificate, I knew that while I had a firm foundation in orthodontic care practices, I needed to keep expanding my knowledge. Oral healthcare, and especially orthodontics, is constantly evolving and I need to stay at the leading edge in order to provide my patients with the best care options available. Every year I participate in orthodontic study clubs and attend lectures, meetings, and hands-on demonstrations of the latest technologies and treatment methodologies.
A lot of my continuing education comes through my memberships in the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, and American Board of Orthodontics, which offer venues for me to learn from and with my peers, including conferences and literature.
I’m a native of Long Beach and live here with my wife, Karen. I’ve one adult daughter, Meghan. When I’m not caring for my patients, I enjoy boating and running, Fantasy Football, traveling, and reading, and I follow UCLA basketball, too. I’m an avid golfer: One year I participated in a tournament where I made a hole-in-one and won a car!
I’m also a believer in community involvement, no matter what one’s profession is. I’ve been a member of the Rotary for 20 years, served on the board of governors for Long Beach City College for seven years, and been the senior advisor to the orthodontic program of the Assistance League of Long Beach for more than 20 years, as well. I’m also involved with the Better Learning for All Students Today (BLAST) organization, and sponsor multiple charity events throughout the year. This community has given me so much, and I’d like to repay a bit of that.
